When planning an individual retreat at Light on the Hill, you have several options from which to choose, including where you want to stay, how much (if any) guidance you would like, and whether you would like to have us provide your meals.

Our cottages and huts offer serenity, safety, and simplicity. Except for Pathlight Cottage, they have no electricity. They have propane heaters and battery-powered lighting. In Woods and Meadow Cottages, the stove and refrigerator are powered by propane, and the water pump is powered by a generator. These cottages both have bathrooms with showers, as well as wood stoves. The more rustic retreat huts have outhouses, but retreatants have access to a shower at a nearby cottage. Sheets and towels are provided.

Pathlight Cottage, near Inner Light Lodge, has more amenities: electricity and ceiling fans, along with a kitchen/dining/living area with a pull-out double sofa bed, a separate bedroom with a queen bed, and a spacious and well appointed bathroom. The in-floor radiant heat keeps the cottage cozy in the deepest of winter. Our newest cottage, Pathlight is perfect for anyone who might require a CPAP machine or electricity for their retreat practices.

You can choose to be on your own or receive guidance from a retreat guide. The types of retreat (partially guided, guided, and healing) are described on our Individual Retreats page.

Retreatants can decide to have all meals provided by Light on the Hill ($35/day), just dinners ($25/day), or they can bring their own food. [PLEASE NOTE: During the COVID-19 pandemic, Light on the Hill is not able to provide meals for individual retreatants. You will need to bring your own meals.]

The cottages are also available for small group retreats. All retreatants have access to Stillpoint Sanctuary, 2 labyrinths, and beautiful walking trails. Find more details about sleeping options and pictures of the cottages and huts and information about rates, meals, and what to bring elsewhere on our website. You may also want to visit our Frequently Asked Questions page.

Submit the form below to inquire about available dates. We require a $50 deposit to hold your reservation. You may pay the $50 deposit either with a credit card following the submission of this form (follow in the link on the next screen or in the confirmation email) or by mailing a check to Light on the Hill, 209 Blake Hill Rd, Van Etten NY 14889. Please note a $1.75 processing fee will be added to credit card payments.

Please note our COVID-19 Protocols:

If you have a temperature above 100.4F, are exhibiting any COVID-19 symptoms, have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and have not been cleared to discontinue isolation, are under evaluation for COVID-19, or have been exposed to someone who has tested positive in the last fourteen days, we ask that you not come to Light on the Hill. Please seek proper medical care and contact your local health department for guidance on how to quarantine and/or isolate.

If you have traveled from or within any state non-contiguous to New York, or internationally, you are required to quarantine upon entry into New York for ten days OR follow the test-out procedures outlined on the New York COVID-19 Travel Advisory website. You may not come to Light on the Hill during your mandatory quarantine period or before you receive two negative COVID-19 tests (one test within three days prior to arriving in New York, one test on the fourth day after you return). See the COVID-19 Travel Advisory information here: https://coronavirus.health.ny.gov/covid-19-travel-advisory.

  • Please select the type of retreat you are planning below. Alice McDowell, Spiritual Director of Light on the Hill, works with retreatants for healing, guided, and partially guided retreats. Scheduling one of these types of retreats depends on Alice's availability. Light on the Hill staff will contact you after your submission to confirm your dates. For more information on types of retreats, please see our Individual Retreats page.
  • Please nominate which cottage or hut you would prefer to stay in. We will do our best to place you in your preference.
